The strategy foresees various initiatives in the very short term, and also seeks to foster collaboration and cooperation between the different actors in the value chain to promote a circular and decarbonized economic model.
Ball Corporation has announced that its next step will be to become a 100% circular and sustainable company, carrying out a climate transition plan to achieve this. In this way, the company will improve the service it offers to its participants by proposing environmentally friendly solutions.
The year 2022 was an important moment for Ball Corporation when it published its Combined Report, which showed the results of the company’s policy on environmental, social and economic sustainability. In addition, it detailed the progress made to meet its 2030 goals related to its industry and social impact.
Mr. Dan Fisher, who serves as CEO of Ball Corporation, said the global company with 143 years of history has sufficient resources and experience to face any difficulties. He also said that the 2022 climate transition report demonstrates the commitment to innovate and maintain a high level of operational excellence. It is expected that Ball will continue to maintain sustainability as a primary goal for a promising future.
Ball’s Climate Transition Plan is based on science and UN guidelines to achieve transparent decarbonization. Setting clear objectives for 2030 and beyond, the plan contemplates three different paths with some flexibility for possible changes during the process. It is also economically and technologically feasible.
According to Ramón Arratia, director of sustainability at Ball Corporation, this decade will be the one that will determine whether or not the proposed climate transition goal is achieved. Therefore, this effort has been focused on 55% reductions, applying best practices and existing commercial technologies. Ball’s Climate Transition Plan will help customers meet their Scope 3 emissions targets. Collaboration between customers and suppliers, as well as joint advocacy for high circularity, will be necessary for success.
The 2022 Combined Report presents in depth the efforts Ball has been making to achieve innovation, increase productivity and position its people and culture as vital parts of its success.
The document presented contains several important features, among which are:
Ball continues to promote the full use of recycling for its products and has made significant progress in terms of beverage containers, whose recyclable content now represents 66% of the total, which is 3% higher than in the previous season.
In the coming year, Ball will focus on selling products made from materials such as recyclables, reusables and recycled materials, ranging from beverage cans, bottles and cups to aerosol cans and slugs. This will generate an impressive 87% ($13.37 billion) of the company’s global revenue.
By the end of 2022, all Ball plants were certified to the Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard issued by the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI). At the beginning of 2023, the Ball group also obtained recognition for its aerosol products, which meant greater commitment from customers knowing that they were governed by strict environmental and social standards.
During 2022, Ball was able to ship huge volumes of aluminum beverage cans around the globe. These shipments grew by 12% over the previous year and five new aerosol manufacturing processes are planned for 2023, establishing themselves in the EMEA and NCA markets. To complete the company’s successful role, its Ball Aluminum Cup® plant now has two manufacturing lines that produce cups from 9 to 24 ounces using only recycled material.
Ball Aerospace has been commissioned to create the new and improved space telescope named after James Webb. The goal of this project is to be able to see approximately 13.5 billion years back in time, something that has never been achieved before. It is being funded by NASA (USA), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
