Ball Corporation and Novelis have joined the World Economic Forum’s coalition of pioneers to foster value chain collaboration to drive decarbonization in the aluminum sector.

From the aluminum branch of the World Economic Forum’s First Movers Coalition (FMC), they call on the industry to prioritize circularity and encourage them to join the FMC. Precisely, both companies will lead collaboration across the entire aluminum industry value chain towards the same goal, creating a path for aluminum sectors such as beverage packaging, automotive, aerospace, electronics and construction.

As members of the FMC, both Ball and Novelis have committed to purchase 10% of all primary aluminum annually as near-zero carbon emissions by 2030. The two companies have also teamed up to ensure that at least 50% of all aluminum used annually is sourced from recycled aluminum by 2030. Ball also focuses on its 2030 circularity vision for the aluminum beverage container industry to achieve 85% recycled content.

The aluminum industry as a whole is responsible for two percent of the world’s man-made GHG emissions and emits more than one billion tons of carbon dioxide, mainly due to the electricity needed to produce primary aluminum. Demand for aluminum continues to grow as an enabler of the mobility, energy and circular economy transition.

“We are proud to partner with First Movers Coalition and partner with Novelis to drive the significant change needed across our industry. We know that to achieve the deep decarbonization needed, new and more effective forms of collaboration and transformation will be required around the world.” the value chain,” says Ron Lewis, Director of Operations, Global Beverage Packaging, Ball Corporation.

“Recycling aluminum consumes much less energy than producing primary aluminum, and we want that energy to come from sustainable sources. Aluminum has the potential to achieve a near-zero carbon footprint, but it requires investment in clean energy and redoubling our commitment to recycling. Partnerships like First Movers Coalition can stimulate those investments by supporting an emerging market for technology development. Novelis welcomes the opportunity to join FMC and accelerate innovation in our industry,” says Steve Fisher, president and CEO of Novelis Inc.

Recently, Novelis also announced that it will build a new 600-kiloton low-carbon aluminum recycling and rolling plant in Alabama, in addition to partnering to reduce the carbon footprint of Ball Aluminum Cup™ by increasing recycled content to 90%, the highest recycled content rate of all beverage containers in its category.
