Ball Corporation, a supplier of sustainable aluminum packaging, and Beiersdorf, a global leader in skin care, have been honored at the CanTech Grand Tour Awards in the Aerosols category for their innovative lightweight aerosol can made from 100% recycled aluminum. In addition, this innovation received a special mention for its advances in sustainability.

The can, developed in collaboration with Beiersdorf, increased the recycled content of ‘Nivea Men Black & White’ cans in Europe from 50% to 100%. This transition was made possible by Ball’s patented ‘ReAl’ alloy, which ensures high recycled content without compromising strength, durability or weight reduction benefits.

Victoria Marletta, Ball’s vice president of commercial, noted, “This award demonstrates Ball’s leadership in the aluminum industry, driving sustainability through innovations such as ‘ReAl’ alloy, which improves performance and meets environmental expectations.”

The ‘ReAl’ alloy eliminates the need for virgin aluminum, reducing carbon emissions over the entire product life cycle. By recycling aluminum, which saves 95% of the energy needed to produce it from raw materials, the transition at Beiersdorf represented an annual savings of 7,700 tons of CO₂.

Dr. Gitta Neufang, head of R&D at Beiersdorf, commented, “This achievement reflects our commitment to sustainability and meeting consumer expectations for responsible packaging.”
