Asahi has launched for New Zealand this self-compressing draught beer can, called Asahi Super Dry.

Nama Jokki, which translates as ‘fresh pitcher of beer’, is a premium product and is sealed in an innovative can that releases a silky foam when opened at the right temperature. Nama Jokki is very popular in Japan but this is the first time it will be sold outside Asia. Oliver Downs, marketing manager for Asahi Beverages NZ, says their New Zealand neighbors will be able to get their hands on this innovative Japanese Nama Jokki beer later this month.

Self-compression occurs due to a non-uniform surface inside the can that causes bubbles to form naturally when the lid is opened. These bubbles rise to the top, forming the foam that helps maintain freshness and flavor, similar to an Asahi Super Dry on tap. The can’s lid lifts off completely to reveal a smooth rim, creating an open container from which to drink straight from.

It is important that the can be between four and eight degrees to achieve this effect.

Downs said there are a few important steps to follow to get the best Asahi Super Dry draft beer experience.

The patented “double lock” design of the can ensures smooth edges when opening, but it is important that consumers do not pull hard on the tab to open the lid.

The innovation behind Asahi Super Dry Nama Jokki took four years to develop in Japan and is part of Asahi’s goal to “deliver on our promise of great taste and bring more fun to life” by offering innovative products.
