Ardagh Group S.A., (including Ardagh Metal Packaging and Ardagh Glass Packaging) and its renewable energy partners Eneco and Zoncoalitie announced the start of work on three solar projects in the Netherlands. The solar installations will supply Ardagh’s Dongen, Moerdijk and Oss facilities with on-site generated renewable electricity and are part of Ardagh’s strategy to use 100% renewable electricity by 2030.

Precisely, the Netherlands is the first country where Ardagh will supply sustainable energy generated on-site through large-scale solar power installations, with plans to further deploy the technology with local energy partners in all regions.

“This is an exciting time for Ardagh Group’s renewable energy program,” said Adam Koehler, who manages this area. According to the executive, the group’s facilities in the Netherlands will use solar power to supply electricity to its metal and glass facilities, combined with the fact that it is able to reduce its carbon footprint.

Ardagh used Zoncoalitie, the independent solar energy expert, to conduct an extensive technical commercial and feasibility assessment. To ensure competition, it offered that only the company that produced good results during the bidding processes would be selected.

Ardagh is already partnering with Eneco, a renewable energy company that promises to be climate neutral by 2035 both in-house and in the electricity supply it provides to its customers. Approximately 24,700 panels will be installed at the three locations and will soon be able to generate approximately 12,677 MWh of renewable electricity each year.

In 2020, Ardagh launched its Renewable Energy Program to implement its strategy and monitor its renewable electricity activities. In Europe, five on-site solar projects (in the Netherlands, Irvine, Scotland and Dublin, Ireland) will replace 14,500 MWh of grid electricity consumption, avoiding the release of 3,800 tons of carbon emissions per year.
