With the financial backing of Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) and Crown Holdings (Crown), several material recovery facilities (MRFs) in Alabama and California have added equipment designed to recover more than 31 million aluminum beverage cans per year. This improvement will prevent many cans from ending up in landfills due to sorting errors.
These new grants represent the seventh and eighth awarded by AMP and The Recycling Partnership has managed all eight grants in their entirety. Together, the investment has enabled the installation of technology capable of recovering around 150 million aluminum cans annually.
The impact of recycling these millions of cans each year is considerable. According to CMI’s can recycling impact calculator, the more than 30 million cans recovered annually through the two most recent grants will generate more than $500,000 in revenue and avoid CO₂ emissions equivalent to driving more than 7.6 million miles by car. In addition, recycling the approximately 150 million cans annually derived from all grants awarded to date represents an economic impact of about $2.3 million and enough energy savings to power more than 6,000 U.S. homes for a year.
“Improper can sorting is a wasted opportunity to increase revenue for the U.S. recycling system, strengthen the circular economy and reduce the carbon footprint,” said Jens Irion, CEO of AMP-North America. “We at Ardagh Metal Packaging are proud to contribute to more aluminum cans being recycled properly.”
