The multinational ArcelorMittal has just obtained the ResponsibleSteel™ certification for the Asturias Cluster, after passing the audit process completed in November 2021. This audit process, carried out by DNV GL, is aimed at verifying that the company’s activity complies with a series of rigorous standards defined in a wide range of social, environmental and corporate governance criteria and the relationship with its stakeholders.
To receive ResponsibleSteel™ certification, each plant must undergo a demanding external audit, the report of which is reviewed by an independent Certification Committee that makes the final decision.
In this regard, Phlippe Meyran, CEO of ArcelorMittal’s Asturias Cluster, points out that “obtaining the ResponsibleSteel™ certificate is a reflection of our commitment to our people, the community and the environment around us. Steel is the most widely used material in the world and those who use it in sectors such as transportation, automotive, infrastructure, packaging, construction, energy and household appliances increasingly require the certainty that the materials they use have been obtained through sourcing and production processes based on responsible practices. ResponsibleSteel™ aims to address these requirements.”
Meyran adds that “this certificate distinguishes us from our competitors and endorses the path we have taken to decarbonize our business and make it sustainable for future generations. This is what responsible management is all about, combining economic development, social inclusion, environmental sustainability and transparent governance to help shape a more sustainable future for people and the planet.”
Ali Lucas, acting CEO of ResponsibleSteel, highlights “we are very proud to award ArcelorMittal’s Asturias Cluster the first ResponsibleSteel™ certificate issued in Spain. The plants that make up this cluster have made a great effort to ensure compliance with the twelve principles set out in the ResponsibleSteel™ standard”.
ArcelorMittal Asturias is the fifth ArcelorMittal Europe cluster to obtain this certification. As announced in July 2021, ArcelorMittal’s plants in Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg were the first steel plants in the world to receive the certification. ArcelorMittal Mediterranée (France) obtained its certification on May 2, 2022.
