The main canned fish and seafood industry associations of Spain and Portugal, ANFACO-CECOPESCA and ANICP (National Association of Canned Fish Industry) have signed a memorandum of understanding in the city of Matosinhos (Portugal). This agreement is aimed at promoting the competitiveness of the Iberian canning sector through the defense of common interests and the implementation of strategic measures to ensure the supply of raw materials, strengthen trade and promote sustainability.

The protocol signed addresses issues of relevance to the development of the sector and its impact on the economy of the Iberian Peninsula, such as access to raw materials, the defense of the industry against international trade agreements and the promotion of a healthy diet based on canned fish and seafood, such as the Atlantic Diet. The Iberian canning industry is currently facing challenges that include market globalization, fishery sustainability and increasing regulatory requirements.

In this context, the agreement establishes a framework for collaboration so that Spain and Portugal can compete on equal terms with third countries while maintaining the highest standards of quality and corporate social responsibility. Trade defense in the EU context The canned fish and seafood industry in Spain and Portugal, which employs more than 15,500 people, faces the threat of competitive disadvantages arising from trade agreements that could favor third countries.

This protocol seeks to ensure that the interests and competitiveness of European industries are respected in international negotiations, protecting sensitive products such as canned tuna and ensuring fair access conditions for the EU market. Promotion of the Atlantic Diet Both associations reaffirm their commitment to the Atlantic Diet, which promotes the regular consumption of fish and seafood. This dietary approach stands out for its health benefits, being rich in protein and Omega-3.

The promotion of this diet seeks not only to raise consumer awareness, but also to support the Iberian canning industry in its commitment to quality and sustainability, increasing its competitiveness in local and international markets.
