A delegation of the Brazilian government led by the Executive Secretary of Fisheries, Carlos Mello, has visited the facilities of ANFACO-CECOPESCA to strengthen existing collaboration and set new joint actions. The visit is part of a full agenda of cooperation with the government of Spain in the fight against IUU fishing and improving traceability.

The ANFACO-CECOPESCA team reiterated the commitment of the Spanish sector with Brazil, there being strong business investments that need legal certainty and a level playing field. Thus, the good legislative work developed in Brazil in hygienic-sanitary matters was put on the table, and the need to lift the sanitary blockade imposed by the European Union since 2017. The evidence and improvements implemented in the country were shown, which are confirmed in the different action plans sent to DG SANTE (European Commission), and which demonstrate the existing confidence in the Brazilian fishing chain. During the meeting, the loss of opportunity in bilateral trade that must be resolved by the European Commission in the face of the progress and commitment shown by Brazil was exposed. In 2017, before the imposition of a sanitary blockade that originated in livestock, there was an import in Spain of 12,544 thousand € of fishery and aquaculture products, whose main item was frozen fish, with 10,810 thousand €, with frozen skipjack or striped belly bonito being the main product, and which was destined for the manufacture of canned food in Spain, mainly in Galicia. In this period, Spain has also lost part of its exports to the Brazilian market. In 2017, a total of 9,306.97 thousand € of fishery products were exported, among which the blue sharks stood out, and whose quantity already decreased by 50% in 2018. Therefore, the commitment to strengthen trade relations for mutual benefit is reiterated, avoiding bureaucratic obstacles to exports.
