ANFACO-CECOPESCA received the visit of the Vice Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries of Ecuador, Rafaela Hurtado Espinosa, with the aim of presenting the best practices in the Spanish marine-industry chain and strengthening relations between the two countries.

At that meeting, a meeting was held with the president of the Port Authority of Vigo, Carlos Botana, and his management team, in order to know the procedures of fish traceability and control of goods that are carried out in the terminal, delving into the importance of truthful and consistent data. In addition, the possibilities of the FAO Blue Ports Initiative (BPI), through which economic and social development is promoted, in parallel with the sustainability of the different activities and coastal-oceanic interactions, were shown.

The importance of collaboration, such as that with ANFACO-CECOPESCA, for these purposes was also highlighted. Subsequently, the Vice Minister visited the facilities of ANFACO-CECOPESCA, holding a plenary meeting with top managers of associated companies. A review was made of the trade exchanges between Ecuador and Spain, whose trade balance in the fishing sector as a whole shows a coverage rate of 32% for the year 2023, implying a net balance in Spain of -89,086 tons. The main products imported by Spain from Ecuador are frozen penaeus spp. prawns (52%), canned tuna (22%) and tuna loins (19%). Spain mainly exports frozen whole tuna. One of the key issues of the meeting was the situation corresponding to the yellow card that the European Union imposed on Ecuador for IUU fishing in 2019, being essential to resolve all the deficiencies detected and greater surveillance and control in terms of fisheries traceability. Especially, in relation to processing plants to ensure the “level playing field” when exporting to the Community market.
