This week ANFACO-CECOPESCA has formalized its definitive entry into EFFOP (https://effop.org/), the European Association of Fish Oil and Fishmeal Manufacturers, as part of its Strategic Plan 2024-2026, which aims to strengthen its sectorial representativeness and promote technical associations as a lever to defend the legal security of companies.

EFFOP is the most important European Association of Fish Oil and Fishmeal Manufacturers, whose mission is to defend the interests in legislative matters, promote good practices and establish collaborations with the European Commission.

The entry of ANFACO-CECOPESCA is a milestone for EFFOP, as the Spanish production of products based on the valorization of fish processing industries, and as leaders in circular economy and innovation.

This inclusion will strengthen ANFACO-CECOPESCA’s actions together with the by-products valorized production subsector, being Spanish fish oils and meals the example of a real circular economy in the fishing industry, and a differentiation with other countries. As a fact, during 2023, the Spanish industry associated in this division, known as ANFAPHES, processed more than 40,000 tons of fishmeal and almost 10,000 tons of fish oils in the 6 companies in the country.

Membership in EFFOP is a new recognition, enhancing the platform for collaboration with European partners and strengthening the influence on future policies ahead of the next legislative cycle starting in June. This will have a real effect on the use of these fish oils and fishmeal in important sectors such as animal feed and aquaculture.

EFFOP has already made statements such as: “With more than 90% of its raw materials derived from fish by-products, the Spanish industry exemplifies the sustainable use of resources […] New opportunities for growth and innovation in by-product techniques will be created, opening doors for progress and improvement of the sector”.
