Alupro has just  published an updated version of its pioneering Aluminum Manifesto. Initially launched in 2022, the Aluminum Manifesto outlines the views of the aluminum packaging industry and details the changes needed to deliver a world-class recycling system for the UK.

This Manifesto highlights the positive progress made to date, including a simpler recycling policy debate and a binary labeling system. The 2024 update also identifies where more progress is needed. This includes addressing the confusion around Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the need for sector-specific innovation support.

Its seven key requests call for changes to existing infrastructure, consistent communications and well-designed legislation.

Tom Giddings, CEO of Alupro, said:  “Aluminum packaging plays a vital role in achieving a circular economy. Our updated manifesto serves not only as a progress report, but also as a call for renewed action across the entire aluminum packaging supply chain.”

He further adds, “Our industry is incredibly proud of the increase in recycling rates we have achieved over the past 10 years, with over 80% of beverage cans and nearly 70% of all aluminum packaging being recycled in recent years.”  It should also be emphasized that this has been driven voluntarily by Alupro members, although the limit of what is possible without significant regulatory support is already being reached.

“Our manifesto outlines seven key applications needed to deliver a world-class recycling system for the UK,” says Giddins, “and while we are encouraged by the small steps taken over the past two years, there is still work to be done. We hope it will serve as a roadmap to achieve a 100% recycling rate for aluminum packaging, encourage collaboration and maximize the contribution of aluminum packaging to a circular economy in the UK.”
