Aluminum cans, the new source of income for people without resources in La Línea de la Concepción in Spain.
The association Nuevo Hogar Betania, recently launched the campaign ‘No te cortes, danos la lata’ (Don’t cut yourself, give us the can). This ambitious initiative aims to collect 300 to 500 tons of aluminum cans before the end of the year, resulting in a double objective: to develop innovative social projects while caring for the environment.
Recently, Nuevo Hogar Betania pointed out that the collection of this type of waste, so common in any home, could represent an income of between 180,000 and 300,000 euros after its sale to the relevant recycling plants. These are very important amounts for this non-profit organization and would allow it to embark on a new project to help disadvantaged groups, which will be announced soon.
In addition, the organization encourages all those companies and foundations that wish to participate in this solidarity collection. The can collection and recycling project not only helps to keep the streets clean, but also protects the planet by producing aluminum with 95% less energy than a new product. This solidarity initiative also means that this simple gesture will help to improve the lives of people in a situation or at risk of social exclusion through new social projects.
Recycling used cans can be a very effective process. The cans are stacked in 1,000-kilogram blocks and crushed to form small pieces that are melted down again to form large blocks containing the metal from 1.5 million cans. These small pieces are melted into large blocks, each of which contains the metal from 1.5 million cans, which are converted into thin sheets that are rolled into coils that will be used to re-create the containers, explains the association “Every Can Counts”. Used cans can be back in the store in just 60 days and their recycling avoids 3 million tons of harmful gas emissions into the atmosphere each year.
