Aluminum can industry shows 12% growth
The most sustainable beverage container on the planet is gaining ground and increasingly winning over consumers
November 2024. The Brazilian Association of Aluminum Can Manufacturers (Abralatas), the entity that represents the aluminum beverage can sector in Brazil, presented data for the first half of 2024 with a sales result 12% higher than the same period of 2023, and expects to close the year with a double-digit growth.
Combining the advantages of aluminum cans, the sector follows the path marked by economic growth after the positive results of the Brazilian GDP this year. According to Abralatas CEO Cátilo Cândido, Brazilian cans have resumed their growth since 2023, after a period of adjustments due to the end of the pandemic. “We had a very hot summer this year, which favors beverage consumption, and an economic growth that recovers positive rates in the country and increases the population’s purchasing power, added to the strength of aluminum cans in the beverage segment, with new canned products all the time,” explains the president.
One of the highlights during the period was the diversity of products reaching consumers in aluminum cans. Most of these products are growing in the country, getting closer and closer to consumers, such as the so-called “RTDs” (Ready to Drink), cachaça, energy drinks, non-alcoholic beers, wines and sparkling wines, which are gaining more and more space on shelves and menus.
According to Cátilo Cândido, this movement follows a global trend and positions the country at the forefront of the beverage packaging sectors. “We already have more than 20 types of beverages that are packaged in aluminum cans in Brazil. Beer continues to be the star product, with 10% growth, in addition to soft drinks, which grew 23% in the first half of this year. These are figures that we celebrate and represent a clear conscious choice of the consumer, who sees aluminum cans as a safe, convenient and truly sustainable option”, explains the executive.
