Ball Beverage Packaging South America (BPSA) has achieved ASI Performance and Chain of Custody Standard certification for the manufacture of can bodies and can ends at 15 facilities in four countries, becoming the first can manufacturer in the South American region to achieve dual ASI certification for responsible aluminum production, sourcing and stewardship.

Specifically, it has achieved certification for all of its manufacturing facilities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay that produce beverage can bodies and/or ends, bringing the total number of Ball Corporation dual-certified facilities to 38 worldwide. Ball Corporation previously achieved dual certification at 23 of its facilities in the Middle East, Europe and Africa by 2020.

Fiona Solomon, ASI Executive Director notes that “ASI warmly congratulates Ball BPSA on achieving Performance Standards and Chain of Custody Certifications at this production facility in South America. Its global and regional social goals and initiatives for 2030 include employee gender balance and ethnic diversity goals, inclusion and anti-bias training, and policy focus on protection against discrimination and harassment.

Carlos Pires, president of Ball Beverage Packaging adds that “being the first company in South America in the aluminum packaging sector to achieve the Performance and Chain of Custody Standard certifications shows that we are on the right path towards the sustainability of our products. The aluminum can is already a great case of real circularity around the world, since the recycling rate is 69%, even more in Brazil, where 97% of all cans are recycled. We have been working for many years and now with the ASI certification, we see the result of this intense journey being recognized and certified”.

The ASI certification program establishes 59 criteria under the pillars of sustainability, governance, environment and social, addressing key issues such as biodiversity, indigenous peoples’ rights as well as greenhouse gas emissions.
