ALTANA has acquired the closure materials division of Henkel. The specialty chemicals group thus strengthens its range of PVC-free solutions for the packaging industry. Within the ALTANA Group, the business will be integrated into the ACTEGA division and assigned globally to the Metal Packaging Solutions business line. “With the acquisition of Henkel’s closure materials business, we are continuing to systematically implement our acquisition strategy and our focus on innovative specialty chemicals,” says Martin Babilas, CEO of ALTANA AG.
Acquisition essentially involves the acquisition of technologies and customer relationships. “In this way, we are further expanding our sealant business for the packaging industry,” explains Thorsten Kröller, head of ALTANA’s ACTEGA division. “The deal is an ideal complement to our existing product portfolio. With it, we will be able to supply both our existing and new customers with even better and more flexible innovative solutions in the future.”
Sealing compounds are used in a wide variety of packaging, such as food and beverage containers. They protect the contents from external influences and help to extend their service life. ACTEGA has already commercialised a number of sustainable innovations in this area. For example, researchers in Bremen have developed PROVALIN®, the only PVC-free solution for metal vacuum seals to date. Consumers recognise the innovation by the blue ring on the inside of the jar lids.
The brands acquired by Henkel include CELOX® and SINCERA®. The closure materials prevent the ingress of oxygen after filling beer bottles, for example, and help to make mineral water closures particularly airtight and at the same time easier to open.
