Romanian aluminum company Alro SA (Alro Slatina) has announced to its investors that it is working to find a way to be able to resume electrolytic aluminum production at last year’s levels, in order to recover similar levels next year.
In addition, the company plans to start production in two of the five electrolytic aluminum production halls this year. In addition, he will spend the rest of the year organizing the plant to quickly and efficiently begin regular aluminum production once energy costs return to a sustainable price.
“We are actively looking for solutions to secure energy needs for 2023 and thereby preserve the vertical integration feature of our business, as we believe that integration will remain in the long term one of the main advantages of our business model. Based on our current estimates, the restart costs for each electrolysis potroom may be in the range of $10-12 million, depending on the raw material prices at the time and the period elapsed from the time of commissioning,” the company notes.
In addition, Alro adds that it is trying to retain as much of the current workforce as possible by reassigning workers to other functions. The company is currently purchasing cold primary metals from third parties to maintain production of processed products. The firm expects 2022 revenue to remain similar to that of 2021.
The firm, a subsidiary of Vimetco NV, is managed by Russian investor Vitaliy Machitski and has an installed capacity of 265,000 metric tons per year, making it one of the largest producers in Central and Eastern Europe outside Russia and Scandinavia. It also produces 35 thousand metric tons per year of recycled aluminum and produces 335 thousand metric tons per year of molten aluminum.
