This is a unique event in Spain. Every January 5th, thousands of children go through the streets of the city of Algeciras in a deafening procession that gives shape to the tradition of the “Arrastre de Latas”.

Its origin is not clear. Some say that many years ago, the economic and social situation of the city was so bad that parents told their children that the Three Wise Men would not pass through Algeciras, but the little ones, sharpening their wits, gathered pans and cans that they tied to drag them and thus attract Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar to leave them their gifts.

The original story by Juan Ignacio Perez, tells that in Algeciras lived a giant, named Botafuegos, who did not want the children to have gifts, and for that, he lit a huge bonfire whose smoke covered the city preventing it to be seen from afar, although once again, the protagonists of the party managed to guide Their Majesties of the East through the noise.

This year, after the suspension in 2021, due to the pandemic, the delegation of Festivities has taken into account the incidence of Covid-19, to avoid canceling a mass event, so it has established special measures. Many of these children, who have come from other nearby towns, are looking forward to this loud noise to welcome the Three Wise Men by sea.
