ALFED has highlighted the vital role of aluminum for the industry to meet the zero emissions target. To this end, it has analyzed the three key reasons for this role, which are recycling and the circular economy, the reduction of carbon emissions through green technology and support for a clean economy.

⦁ Recycling and circular economy: Aluminum is one of the most recyclable materials in the world. The UK aluminum industry is leading a circular economy, where this metal can be recycled indefinitely without loss of quality. This significantly reduces the need to produce primary aluminum, a highly energy-intensive process, thereby reducing carbon emissions.

⦁ Reducing carbon emissions through green technology:
The UK aluminum sector is adopting cutting-edge green technologies that drastically reduce carbon emissions in both production processes and supply chains. Efforts such as the use of renewable energy in aluminum smelting are helping to decarbonize manufacturing while maintaining industry productivity.

Supporting a green economy: The aluminum industry provides essential components for key sectors in the UK’s green transition. From electric vehicles to renewable energy infrastructure, aluminum is central to the development of low-carbon technologies, driving economic growth while meeting environmental targets.

The Aluminium Federation (ALFED), which represents the interests of the UK aluminum sector, is a key supporter of these objectives. Through innovative initiatives such as the UK Aluminium Strategy and the UK Aluminium Manifesto launched in 2024, ALFED works to provide insights, shape policy and foster collaboration between industry, government and other key stakeholders to unlock the full potential of aluminum in the UK’s fight against climate change.
