From April 14, Aldi supermarkets in the United Kingdom will add a sustainable innovation to their shelves: the first own-brand aluminum wine bottle in the country. This is the Costellore Pinot Grigio (75 cl), priced at £5.99.

The fully recyclable container weighs only 95 grams, which represents a reduction of almost 75% compared to the weight of a traditional glass bottle. This difference translates into considerable logistical savings: more than five tons less per truck, equivalent to the weight of a small elephant.

The wine, a fresh, light Pinot Grigio with citrus and orchard fruit notes, is imported from Italy and bottled in the UK in a plant that operates on sustainable energy.

Julie Ashfield, commercial director at Aldi UK, said, “More and more people want to make choices that make a difference, and we are proud to be leading the way with innovations like this aluminum bottle, which reinforces our commitment to responsible packaging.”

To make this project a reality, Aldi partnered with Broadland Drinks, a British company specializing in low environmental impact packaging solutions for the beverage sector.

Catherine Smith, commercial director of Broadland Drinks, has assured that this new aluminum wine bottle fits with one of the company’s main objectives: “to reduce the carbon footprint and support our retail customers in their own sustainability efforts. We know that the biggest environmental impact of a wine bottle comes precisely from the packaging, so by switching from glass to aluminum, we are helping to meet the growing demand for formats with a lower carbon footprint.”
