ALCOLA’S PLANT IN MINAS GERAIS PREPARES FOR CERTIFICATION AS SUCH

Since it began operating in Brazil in 1965, Alcoa has been investing in actions to minimize the impact of its operations and contribute to improving the quality of life of the communities around it, even before the concept of sustainability became part of everyday life. Precisely continuing with this process, Alcoa’s Poços de Caldas unit has taken a further step to demonstrate its commitment to supporting and promoting responsible practices by preparing the plant for certification according to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) performance standard.

The project will mark the beginning of a new era at the unit, as it will mean a change from bauxite waste disposal technology to dry, ensuring continuity of the unit’s operations. In the case of the Poços de Caldas unit, this change will focus on the use of aluminum scrap in the production of billets, which has practically tripled in the last few years, as well as the implementation of the filter press.

%22We believe this is an important step to add even more value to our products, contributing to sustainability in the aluminum value chain,%22 highlights Fabio Martins, Chief Operating Officer of the Unit. %22This will also be one more way we and Alcoa Global can showcase our commitment to corporate sustainability to all of our stakeholders – employees, partners, competitors, governments and the communities where we operate.%22

The certification audit is scheduled for March next year. Alcoa’s other two sites in the country, Alumar (MA) and Juruti (PA), already have the ASI seal of approval. Obtaining the certification demonstrates the company’s commitment to support responsible and sustainable practices in the aluminum value chain.
