According to the committee’s statement, two of the tanks have already been filled with liquid metal, while two others have begun the pre-heating process.

Alcoa’s team of workers at San Cibrao announced that the first two vats of the aluminum plant, which had been out of production since January 2022, have been started up.

Today, we can state that the tanks that were in the process of heating have already become real tanks, as they now contain liquid metal and are considered to be in operation. This was stated by the committee’s president, José Antonio Zan, on Monday morning. This breakthrough marks an important milestone for the plant and is a step towards its reactivation, although it is not yet known how low its production will be and what its long-term fate will be.
According to the trade unionist, two more tanks have begun the process of heating in order to generate liquid bath. These are using cryolite as a base and are expected to be ready for use on Wednesday in order to start production in more vats due to the help of the liquid bath.

Starting in groups of two and then four, the 32 agreed-upon tanks will be removed, for a total of 512 by March 31. After that date until the following year, specifically April 1, 2025, there will be no further tub withdrawals as planned. Finally, in October 2025, a second stage of the process will begin to complete the remaining 100%.

The resumption of the factory generates uncertainty about its future, as Alcoa announced that it will exhaust the funds available for San Cibrao in the second half of the year.
