Aluminium Bahrain BSC (Alba), the world’s largest smelter outside China has just received the British Safety Council’s International Safety Award of Merit in recognition of its commitment to keeping its workforce safe and healthy during the 2021 calendar year.

Alba’s CEO, Ali Al Baqali, notes that “we are pleased to win the prestigious British Safety Council International Safety Award again as we stay on track to achieve our goal: Together #1 in Safety and ESG” to which he adds that “2021 was truly a golden year in many ways, as we did everything we could to keep our human capital safe in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis and closed the year with over 20 million safe working hours with no lost time injury (LTI). Today, we are headed toward 24 million safe work hours with no lost time injuries (LTI).”

The award was established in 1958 to recognize companies that demonstrated a commitment to workplace safety during the previous year. The BSC not only takes into account measures to ensure the physical safety of workers against accidents, but also recognizes companies that excel in protecting workers against physical and mental harm in the performance of their duties.

Alba is one of the largest industrial companies in the Middle East and is the largest aluminum smelter in the world outside the People’s Republic of China. Originally incorporated in 1968, the company is headquartered in Bahrain and 84% of its total workforce are Bahraini nationals.

It began operations in 1971 with an annual capacity of 120,000 metric tons. Modernization increased production to 450,000 metric tons in 1992. In the spring of 2005, Alba inaugurated Line 5, increasing production by 860,000 metric tons per year. In 2020, the Alba smelter produced 1,548,500 metric tons of primary aluminum.
