The multinational AkzoNobel announced that it has already succeeded in using 100% renewable electricity in North America. All AkzoNobel locations in North America will now operate on 100% renewable electricity, which will help drive the company’s ambition to reduce carbon emissions across the value chain by 50% by 2030 (2018 baseline).
This important milestone, reached earlier this year, is the latest in AkzoNobel’s ongoing efforts to transition to 100% renewable electricity at all of its sites globally, with Europe having reached the milestone by early 2022.
“We have aligned our own sustainability ambitions with the Paris agreement, which aims to limit global warming and ensure that global temperature rise does not exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.” said Wijnand Bruinsma, AkzoNobel’s Director of Sustainability, who added that “as the first paints and coatings company to also set science-based sustainability targets, we are determined to fulfill our ambitions and this achievement in North America is another big step in the right direction.”
“In addition to moving to renewable electricity and reducing our overall energy consumption, we are also working across our value chain. We are engaging with our suppliers and continue to develop sustainable solutions that help our customers reduce their own carbon footprint.”
Bruinsma added.
The transition to 100 percent renewable electricity in North America includes manufacturing sites, offices, warehouses and research and development facilities. However, the company is looking far beyond its own operations.
