AkzoNobel has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Nordic company Alight, which specializes in the development and operation of solar installations. The agreement includes the construction of a 15 MWp solar park in the municipality of Uppsala, Sweden.

Alight will be responsible for financing, constructing, operating, and maintaining the plant, while AkzoNobel will purchase part of the renewable electricity generated at a stable and competitive price. This energy will supply its adhesives facilities in Kristinehamn and its protective coatings plant in Gothenburg.

AkzoNobel already uses 100% renewable energy in all its European factories, and this project strengthens its clean and reliable supply in Sweden, while also adding new green capacity to the national grid.

The solar park is expected to become operational in 2027, with an estimated production of 16 GWh annually, enough to supply about 3,200 homes. This initiative reinforces AkzoNobel’s commitment to halve its carbon footprint by 2030 and aligns with Alight’s goal of decarbonizing the electricity grid. This is the first contract of its kind that AkzoNobel has signed in Sweden. The company is also exploring a similar energy solution for its plant in Malmö, located in another supply area, and plans new agreements in Germany.
