Aerosol sales in Europe remain stable at 5.2 million units sold in 2023. UK, Germany and France account for more than 55% of Europe’s annual aerosol production across all segments. In collaboration with Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, they collectively produced more than 4.0 billion aerosol dispensers in the same period, according to data offered at BAMA (British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association)
Aerosol containers are primarily made of steel and aluminum, while glass and plastic containers remain marginal. Cosmetics and household products account for more than three-quarters of European production.
Most of these aerosols are used in personal care lines (56.4%), followed by household cleaning products (19.4%).
European aerosol manufacturers have recently met and found several interesting topics for reflection. The UK’s CNAD (National Chamber of Aerosol Industry) believes that a European investigation into the recycling rate of aerosols is needed. Industry experts claim that due to the diversity in the collection, sorting and recycling of aerosols in the different FEA (European Aerosol Federation) member countries, it is not possible to estimate a realistic level of recycling rate, so they propose to use the official figures of the EU member states for metal.
The use of compressed gases in 100% aerosols generates controversy and some industry associations are predisposed to work on an exemption for non-flammable, non-toxic and non-corrosive aerosols. The National Associations claim that they should reduce their energy consumption as a whole.
