For another year, Abralatas, the trade body representing aluminum beverage can manufacturers in Brazil, organized the second edition of its ‘Lata + Bonita’ contest in order to celebrate the best beer can label design in the country for the second year.

To date, the organization has received some 600 proposals awaiting selection. The registration for this second edition of the Most Beautiful Can Award in Brazil, promoted by Abralatas (Association of Aluminum Can Manufacturers) starts with the objective of stimulating the creativity of breweries. Last year more than 3,000 people participated in the popular vote for the most beautiful beer label chosen to sell.

“The 1st edition of the Award sought to recognize the exquisite work that has been done by national breweries. For this 2nd edition, and what we have been following during the last year, we are betting on even more creative labels”. said Cátilo Cândido, executive president of Abralatas.

In Brazil, more than 60% of all beer is bottled in cans, the most recycled packaging in the world, with a life cycle of only 60 days between consumption and the return of already recycled containers to the shelves – in addition to generating income for more than 800,000 recyclers.

In addition, all Brazilian breweries that produce their labels according to the standards established by the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Supply can compete for the award. One of the indispensable requirements is that all the labels submitted for the competition must have been created and produced in Brazil.

The announcement of the winners and the award ceremony is scheduled to take place in December of this year. The award also has the important support of Abrabar (Brazilian Association of Bars and Nightclubs), Abracerva (Brazilian Association of Craft Beer), CervBrasil (Brazilian Association of the Brewing Industry) and Sindicerv (National Union of the Brewing Industry).

This award has three well-differentiated categories, taking into account the size of the companies. The first of these, microbreweries aimed at the annual production of up to 2.5 million canned beer; the second category focuses on medium-sized breweries with a production of between 2.5 million and 60 million units/year; and the third category is aimed at the market of large breweries with a production of more than 60 million units/year.

In addition, the new edition of the Beer Yearbook, from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, reveals that the number of breweries in Brazil increased by 12% compared to 2020. This means that the country now has 1,549 breweries in operation, a trend that is experiencing strong growth. According to the data in this yearbook, in 2011, Brazil had 129 breweries; a significant leap in just a decade.

In October 2021, in the first edition of the contest, more than 3,000 people voted for the most beautiful beer labels. Of the 150 labels entered, 26 finalists were analyzed by a technical jury to evaluate them. The winners in each category were widely publicized by Abralatas and the details involved in the manufacture of the cans were also made known.
