Crown Becomes First Metal Packaging Manufacturer to Activate 100% Renewable Energy
Crown Holdings becomes the first metal container manufacturer to activate renewable energy at 100% of its beverage can plants in the United States and Canada.
These results are part of the 15-year Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with Longroad Energy.
Completing a similar transition for the group in the UK means that 27.5% of the group’s global business will be operating on renewable energy.
As the company notes on its website, “This accelerated use of alternative energy sources serves as an important step in Crown’s plan to use 60% renewable electricity by 2030, 90% by 2040 and 100% by 2050, goals set out in Twenty by 30, Accelerating Sustainability, a comprehensive climate-focused sustainability program that aims to achieve sustainability through 20 goals by 2030.
Among them is the announced achievement. “This VPPA, which makes us the first in our industry to complete an energy transition for all U.S. and Canadian beverage can manufacturing facilities, is an important milestone in our journey to use 100% renewable electricity by 2050 and play a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our operations,” said John Rost, Ph.D., Vice President, Global Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs at Crown.
