Metal for Packaging Europe (MPE) has applauded the European Commission’s recent proposals to strengthen and expand the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), calling them a key step towards fairer carbon prices, greater climate ambition and a more resilient European industry.
The proposal includes expanding the CBAM to cover additional steel and aluminum products, as well as measures to prevent the circumvention of carbon obligations, ensuring more equitable competitive conditions and encouraging emission reductions throughout the supply chain.
MPE has stressed the importance of including final and semi-finished products in the mechanism, noting that this would protect European industry from high-emission imports and strengthen the sustainability and circularity of metal packaging. The association believes that, if properly implemented, these measures will contribute both to the EU’s climate objectives and to the competitiveness of the sector.
The initiative is part of the European Union’s efforts to prevent carbon leakage and move towards a climate-neutral economy, aligning trade policy with the bloc’s environmental objectives.
