Orora showcased its new Helio digital printing technology to approximately 30 beverage industry clients and design specialists at its Dandenong plant on October 22, marking a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing investment in advanced packaging capabilities.

Attendees included brand owners such as Coca-Cola, Remedy, Garage Beverages, Suntory, Mountain Culture, Brick Lane, and Hop Nation, along with design agencies and industry experts. The event allowed participants to observe firsthand how the Helio direct-to-can digital printing platform is transforming beverage packaging by eliminating the limitations of traditional printing methods.

The Helio system, officially launched earlier this year, enables high-speed, high-quality decoration of aluminum cans, offering faster production times, smaller minimum order quantities, and unlimited design possibilities. This technology is ideal for promotional campaigns, new product launches, and limited edition series in categories such as soft drinks, craft beer, RTDs, sparkling water, and kombucha.

According to Chris Smith, Executive General Manager of Orora Cans, the introduction of Helio represents a significant shift in how beverage brands interact with consumers:

“Helio allows us to take can decoration to the next level. Given that primary packaging plays a key role in brand storytelling, this technology offers our customers the flexibility to innovate quickly and creatively,” Smith stated.

The Government of Victoria supported Orora’s overall expansion in Dandenong, which included the completion of a multi-size can line for $80 million in 2023. Victoria’s Minister for Industry and Advanced Manufacturing, Colin Brooks, highlighted the investment:

“Orora’s Helio technology is an excellent example of how local innovation is transforming global industries, while supporting skilled jobs and strengthening Victoria’s manufacturing capability.”

The launch of Helio is part of Orora’s capacity expansion program, which also includes new production lines in Revesby (NSW) and Rocklea (Qld), with a combined investment exceeding $300 million. These initiatives enable Orora to meet the growing demand for sustainable and infinitely recyclable aluminum packaging in Oceania.
