The Beverage Can Association has celebrated the first edition of the 90th Anniversary of the Beverage Can Awards, a recognition of the role of this packaging in the innovation, sustainability, and communication of the sector. The ceremony took place on September 25 at the Institute of Engineering of Spain and brought together representatives from leading beverage brands, associations, entities, and media outlets.
In total, six awards were given in different categories. The jury was composed of leading professionals such as Miguel Aballe, founder of Envisage and first director of the Association; Deodoro Valle, former executive of Coca-Cola; designer Marta Pascual (Uak Design); consultant Carlos Jimeno; and journalist Gerardo Riquelme, deputy director of Marca.
The winners were:
- Design in Soft Drinks: Monster Bad Apple. Award presented by Beatriz Blasco (ANFABRA) and collected by Markus Krebs, Regional VP Iberia.
- Design in Beer: Alhambra Reserva 1925. Presented by Jacobo Olalla (Cerveceros de España) and collected by Selene Martín and Paula Rueda (Mahou San Miguel).
- Innovation in New Beverages: La Casera Hierbabuena. Award presented by Marta Pascual and collected by Marta Briso (Suntory Beverage & Food Spain).
- Innovation in Packaging: Eneryeti. Award presented by Yolanda Sanz (Asociación Metalgráfica Española) and collected by Daniel Álvarez, general manager of the company.
- Best Communication: Cruzcampo, “Beers with a strong accent”. Award presented by Gerardo Riquelme and collected by Irene Asencio (Heineken).
- Sustainable Brand: collective recognition to all companies for their commitment to the circularity of the can. Presented by Miguel Aballe and collected on behalf of the sector by Paloma Sánchez (FIAB).
The ceremony, led by Mercedes Gómez, included an initial speech by Lluís Pitarch, president of the Association, who highlighted the relevance of the can in the decarbonization strategy and in the implementation of future deposit and return systems in Spain and Portugal.
The grand finale was given by environmental communicator Miguel Aguado with an emotional speech about the role of this packaging in everyday life. After the event, the guests shared a cocktail in the gardens of the Institute of Engineering of Spain.
