The multinational company PPG has announced the expansion of its line of coatings for easy-open beverage can ends, with new products designed to meet the growing global demand for more sustainable and safe solutions. The new range contains no bisphenol A (BPA) or perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), allowing it to comply with stringent international regulations on food contact materials.
The expansion includes three new solutions within its PPG INNOVEL® and PPG iSENSE® series, developed specifically to preserve the flavor, quality, and shelf life of beverages, while optimizing productivity on manufacturing lines.
Highlights include:
- PPG INNOVEL PRO PPG2489, a high-performance interior coating designed for high-speed stamping lines and capable of withstanding extreme temperatures and pressures.
- PPG Innovel EVO PPG6720, a water-based coating formulated for beer, with low film weight and low volatile organic compound (VOC) content, making it a more environmentally friendly alternative.
- PPG iSENSE PPG5018, a highly durable exterior coating, available in transparent and gold finishes, designed for fast production lines.
According to Viktoria Tager, global strategic market director for easy-open ends in PPG’s packaging coatings division, “these solutions respond to the current challenges of the beverage sector, ensuring regulatory compliance and maintaining high performance in different types of beverages and industrial processes”.
Sustainability, adaptability, and proven effectiveness
The new coatings offer significant environmental advantages, such as the possibility of reducing carbon emissions by up to 20% in the case of PPG INNOVEL PRO, thanks to the application of thinner layers. In addition, their compatibility with different can formats (two- and three-piece) and manufacturing processes (winding, stamping, hot filling, or retort) allows their use in a wide variety of production lines worldwide.
PPG produces these coatings in facilities in the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, which strengthens its global supply chain and reduces logistics costs for its customers.
The effectiveness of these solutions has been proven against flavor transfer, corrosion, and the most demanding ingredients present in beverages such as beers, soft drinks, wines, juices, isotonic drinks, or ready-to-drink cocktails, which positions them as a reference for packaging “hard-to-hold” products.
PPG continues to consolidate its leadership in the development of technical coatings that combine innovation, sustainability, and performance for the metal packaging industry.
