Sangüesa has become the first town in Navarre to implement a pilot Deposit, Return and Refund (DRS) system for beverage containers, focusing on single-use cans and plastic bottles.

The project, active from June to the end of August, allows consumers to recover 10 cents for each container returned to machines or local shops. In its first month and a half, 80,000 units have been collected, representing nearly 75% of the containers put into circulation.

The initiative, promoted by the Government of Navarre and the Association of Municipalities of the Sangüesa Region, has reduced the presence of these waste products in the residual waste stream and has encouraged the recycling of cans as a valuable resource within the circular economy.

The pilot has the support of platforms such as Retorna and lays the groundwork for the future implementation of the DRS at the state level, scheduled for November 2026.
