The Canadian government has announced a series of tariff measures in response to the trade policies of the United States. Starting on July 21, 2025, a 50% tariff will be implemented on imports of metals from the U.S., as a countermeasure to the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, which raised tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50%.
In addition, other measures will be introduced to protect the Canadian industry. These will include preferences in federal public procurement for Canadian metal or metal from trading partners that buy from Canada. A tariff quota will also be established based on 2024 import levels from countries without free trade agreements, with the aim of stabilizing the domestic market and preventing trade diversion.
These actions are part of a broader strategy by the Canadian government to protect its workers and industries from tariffs imposed by the U.S. and to foster a more balanced trade relationship between the two countries.
