Tomás López, CEO of Sonoco Metal Packaging EMEA and a Key Figure in the European Can Manufacturing Sector, Has Passed away.

Sonoco has announced with deep sadness the passing of Tomás López, CEO of Sonoco Metal Packaging EMEA and a prominent leader in the European metal packaging industry.

Howard Coker, President and CEO of Sonoco, expressed: “It is with great sadness that we reflect on Tomás’s passing. He was truly a visionary leader in the European metal can manufacturing industry, having developed and led what is now Sonoco Metal Packaging throughout his career. The entire Sonoco family sends its condolences to the López family, as well as to our colleagues at Metal Packaging EMEA, who have lost a leader and inspiration.”

Tomás López began his career in 1980 at Mivisa Envases. Throughout his career, he decisively contributed to the company’s growth, which became the largest producer of metal food packaging in the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco. In 2005, he was appointed CEO of Mivisa.

In 2014, Mivisa was acquired by Crown Holdings, Inc. Subsequently, in 2021, Crown’s food and consumer packaging assets in the EMEA region were sold to KPS Capital Partners, LP, leading to the creation of Eviosys under López’s leadership.

In December 2024, Sonoco acquired Eviosys, and Tomás López continued as CEO of the newly formed Sonoco Metal Packaging EMEA.
