The city of Greenville, Mississippi, has inaugurated the state’s first “Cans for Cash” center, an initiative that financially rewards those who recycle aluminum cans. The project is the result of a collaboration between Every Can Counts U.S., Replenysh, and the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI).
The goal of the center, which is part of a circular economy model, is to promote recycling in communities with limited access to these services. Citizens who bring clean and empty cans will receive $0.30 per pound in digital format, with payments available via gift card, PayPal, or bank transfer.
In addition to promoting recycling, the benefits from the recovered material will be reinvested in local initiatives. This program reinforces the role of aluminum as a key material in sustainable strategies and circular economy models.
