Re-turn, the operator of Ireland’s Deposit and Return System (DRS), is celebrating reaching the milestone of 1 billion beverage containers returned by the Irish public.

This achievement demonstrates that the number of bottles and cans returned would be enough to circle the globe 4.7 times. The 1 billionth container was returned on Tuesday, February 4 at Lidl, Kilcarbery, Dublin, and daily returns continue to grow. In February 2024, returns were in the thousands, and now exceed five million per day at various times, one year after the launch of the Scheme.

Since Return for Children was launched in June, beverage containers have been donated to the initiative at public events, raising €90,000 so far. The partnership was created to support six national children’s charities: Barnardos Ireland, Barretstown, ISPCC’s Childline, Jack and Jill, LauraLynn Children’s Hospice and Make-A-Wish Ireland. Together, these six organizations benefit more than 165,000 vulnerable and seriously ill children in Ireland.

The Irish Deposit and Return System is a circular economy initiative and non-profit organization whose mission is to meet EU recycling targets and promote a shift from a culture of “take, make and dispose” to one of returning valuable materials and keeping them in the economy for as long as possible. Through this system, aluminum cans can be infinitely recycled and PET plastic bottles can be recycled several times, reducing the need for virgin materials.
