ANFACO-CECOPESCA welcomes the separation of Fisheries on Environment, and is waiting with great attention to know the lines of work to be defined by the new Commissioner, Costas Kadis. Precisely, from the entity will be sent the same letter that, a week ago, was sent to President Von der Leyen, calling for the initiation of a Strategic Dialogue for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Food, in order to establish the particularities of the sea-industry chain in the new vision of the European food system. The review of the Common Fisheries Policy is insufficient to address the immediate challenges of the sector.
The request seems to be gaining more strength, as the term “Food” is once again included in the Agriculture portfolio, while Fisheries is involved in aspects of Oceans and their blue growth, with a diversity of activities, such as maritime transport, underwater mining, biotechnology, tourism, etc. Activities that should be included in the announced first oceans pact, entrusted to the Commissioner.
For all the above, from ANFACO-CECOPESCA reinforces the expectation to the new Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, requesting his attention on the sector to ensure access to fisheries and aquaculture resources in the European market for the coming years, in an affordable way for its citizens, and for which the processing industry must assume a priority role in its portfolio. This also requires maximum coordination with the Agriculture and Food portfolio, as these are aspects of the food system itself.
Finally, the new Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič, is congratulated, hoping that he will reorient and slow down the negotiations of Free Trade Agreements currently in force, such as Thailand and Indonesia, if they do not respect the exclusion of sensitive products, such as canned tuna, and break the “level playing field”.
