For the third consecutive year, the leading metal packaging company, Eviosys, has conducted a Europe-wide survey to find out consumers’ views on this product. This year, the survey also included questions about business awareness in terms of sustainability and how this affects their purchasing decisions in terms of packaging. The 2024 survey results show a significant change in Europeans’ attitudes towards sustainability and their preferences for packaging materials.

A study conducted in Europe, which included thousands of opinions from both consumers and companies, highlighted an increase in consumer awareness of the environmental impact of their packaging choices. According to the study, 59% of respondents expressed annoyance at the excessive use of plastic in supermarkets, while 63% identified metal as a more sustainable option.

According to the results found, the majority of buyers are willing to pay a higher price for products presented in environmentally friendly packaging, with 57% being willing to do so. In addition, 82% show a greater inclination to buy products in metal packaging due to its recyclable nature. This preference not only responds to an interest in sustainability, but also reflects a change in the values of today’s consumer, where 70% prioritize reuse and recycling over the luxurious or exclusive appearance of the packaging.

According to the survey results, the industry has responded positively to consumer demands for packaging sustainability, with 90% of companies investing in research and development of greener options over the past year. Although there are still challenges, such as the cost associated with these initiatives, there is an increased awareness on the part of companies regarding the recycling and sustainability of packaging. The next step for companies is to engage their customers on these issues and promote shared responsibility along the supply chain.

Eviosys marketing manager Laetitia Durafour explains that there are only two materials that can be infinitely recycled: glass and metal. However, other packaging materials will eventually end up in the trash. As a producer of metal packaging, it is important to support brands in their transition to a more powerful and truly circular packaging material, such as metal. In addition, more clarity and education for consumers on this issue should be worked on.

Durafour is focused on researching and developing solutions that address both economic viability and environmental responsibility. Its goal is to offer products that meet the needs of its customers and consumers, while educating them on how to make a sustainable transition in packaging. Ecopeel is an example of its commitment to innovation that adapts to present and future market demands.
