The companies Constellium, Elval, Novelis and Speira have signed an agreement to participate in a project whose goal is to increase the levels of recycled content in the beverage can, resulting in a significant decrease in carbon emissions. Currently, the aluminum beverage can body and can end are made from two different aluminum alloys. The aluminum composition for the can body already contains a high percentage of recycled aluminum and promotes ultra-high recyclability.
Additional potential sustainability potential related to the can lid has been identified. The project will focus on exploring more recycling-friendly alloy options for the can lid. The use of recycled aluminum drastically reduces direct carbon emissions and contributes to environmental sustainability. This alternative alloy has a high recycled content and saves 95% energy compared to primary aluminum production.
The ultimate goal is to achieve a 100% recycled aluminum can
EAPG (European Aluminum Packaging) will leverage its platform to carry out the project, building on its extensive experience in developing similar collaborations.
According to Maarten Labberton, a member of European Aluminium, they are fully committed to actions that help decarbonize the aluminum industry. The director of the European Aluminum Packaging Group stated that the project is fundamental to move towards full circularity and will promote sustainability in this sector.
