The National Chamber of the Canned Food Industry (Canafem) debunks the myths surrounding canned foods. Studies and tests have shown that these products do not affect health and can be part of a balanced diet. In addition, they promote their consumption due to their practicality and long shelf lifeThe food industry has experienced great growth not only in Mexico, but also globally. This has encouraged the sector’s players to remain in the market, since the evolution of the industry has made it possible to deliver high quality and safe products to consumers.
According to Canafem, despite warnings about the consumption of canned products, their presence in the market for more than 100 years also means advances in packaging processes. It is essential to debunk myths about the quality of canned foods.

During Expo Pack Mexico 2024, Cecilia Ruiz Gómez, manager of Canafem, mentioned that, contrary to popular beliefs, the steel can is gaining popularity due to studies that demonstrate its recyclability and sustainability. In addition, it is noted that it also allows food to be preserved indefinitely.

Conservation and recyclability of cans
According to Ruiz, canned foods are the only foods that really keep for a long time. Although the cans do not show an expiration date, but rather a recommended consumption date for commercial reasons, these products can last indefinitely due to the vacuum packaging process that prevents the entry of bacteria that can damage them. It is as if time stands still and therefore, the food does not suffer any damage.
As mentioned above, the consumption of soft drink cans continues to increase due to the proximity to the United States, where the habit of consuming this type of beverage is common.

In addition to this, in the personal care sector, aerosols have been widely accepted after changes were made so that they no longer cause harm to the environment.

The company Canafem had an outstanding participation in Expo Pack Mexico 2024, with the objective of promoting the advantages of the containers it produces and representing its partners that manufacture different types of containers made of steel and aluminum. They also excelled in the production of metal caps and closures.

Mexicans consume 160 cans per year
According to data provided by Ruiz Gómez, more than 25 billion aluminum cans and more than 4,500 tinplate food containers are manufactured in Mexico every year. This means that each person in the country consumes approximately 160 cans per year.
Canafem-registered companies use their packaging and containers for a wide variety of products, including food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cleaning, industrial, automotive, beauty, cosmetics, paints, inks and varnishes, and insecticides.
Canafem is responsible for more than 90% of the production of packaging at the national level, including steel and aluminum. Its main focus is large volumes of food and beverages.

The National Chamber of Metal Packaging Manufacturers has been operating in Mexico for more than three decades, but, as he mentioned, the metal packaging industry has a history of more than 100 years in the country. It all started with tin cans that were used to store shoe polish.
There are 20 companies in the country that handle this type of packaging and their role is fundamental in serving the food, beverage and other markets such as the pharmaceutical, industrial, paint, cosmetics and aerosol markets.

What is lacking in Mexico are companies that manufacture steel, aluminum or tinplate sanitary sheets, which forces companies in the sector to import these materials. This factor also affects the number of companies that can participate in the market.
