Tata Steel is nominated in two categories in the Environmental Packaging Awards.  In particular, Nicola Jones, the company’s manager, is a candidate for environmental champion of the year. Jones is an expert in the recycling of Steel aluminum packaging and works from Tata’s UK headquarters. Tata could also be a winner in the sustainable innovation category.

Tata Steel UK has already initiated a sustainability commitment at its Shotton (North Wales) mill  with a target of achieving a 20% reduction in carbon emissions in the first year.

The Shotton plant has been manufacturing market-leading steel products for 125 years. Aware that today’s world is facing a climate emergency, the Shotton team is committed to leaving a positive environmental legacy. As the Shotton site is adjacent to a protected wetland, some of the earliest sustainability efforts to conserve our natural environment were recognized with the Prince of Wales Conservation Award as early as 1971.

The ultimate goal is for Shotton to become a carbon neutral plant well ahead of the deadlines set by the Paris Agreement or national targets, in particular the UK’s target of zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.  We aim for a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and zero waste of materials, in addition to developing and facilitating products and services that support sustainable construction, as well as protecting and enhancing the biodiversity that coexists in our facilities.
