Several entities from different sectors have prepared a document in which they demand the new government of Sánchez to implement the reuse and return of packaging such as cans, bottles and briks in commercial establishments such as stores and supermarkets. This would be a concrete measure to promote more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.
Specifically, these entities have called for the fulfillment of the reuse objectives and the implementation of a Deposit System for cans, bottles and briks similar to the one existing in several European countries. It is expected that in the next two years, this system will be adopted by 15 more communities. This practice allows the reuse or recycling of more than 90% of these containers.
The organizations that have signed the document are complaining about the lack of action on the part of the government and the autonomous communities regarding the inefficient and non-transparent management of packaging waste. Despite having presented evidence from social, environmental and expert entities, both the central government and the autonomous communities are not taking measures to implement the actions proposed in the Law and the Royal Decree on Packaging.
The entities involved are primarily focused on meeting targets related to the reuse and separate collection of 70% of plastic bottles of less than three liters by 2023. In case of non-compliance, the “helmet return” system will be implemented again in Spain.
