Demand for beverage cans continues to increase in Spain. According to forecasts made by the Beverage Can Association, in 2022 beverage can consumption will increase by 0.6% compared to 2021, a period that recorded an all-time record in sales.
In 2022, sales of canned beverages, such as soft drinks, sports drinks and energy drinks, increased by 10%. This was driven by the reopening of commercial channels and the reactivation of outdoor, sports and tourism activities. However, sales of canned beer declined by 6% compared to the previous year due to the return to normality after the pandemic. Even so, canned beer consumption in 2022 was 11% higher than in 2019 before the start of the pandemic, confirming that it is still the preferred packaging for beer consumption in Spanish households. In fact, 57% of the cans sold in Spain are for beer.
Last year also saw a significant increase in canned water sales, doubling the previous year’s figures. This new trend not only has benefits for the environment, since when deposited in the appropriate container it can be recycled and converted into a new can or metal product in just 60 days.
Canned beverages cool faster in the refrigerator because metals are good conductors of heat. In 2022, there was a 45% increase in sales of fruit juices, nectars and musts. In addition, it is important to mention that more than 90% of the beverage cans consumed in Spain are manufactured in the country, which generates a great economic activity and added value thanks to the existing factories.
