Statkraft and Fortia Energia to supply Aludium with renewable energy at stable and competitive prices for 10 years

  • They will provide renewable electricity as of July 1, 2024, covering more than one third of the aluminum manufacturer’s annual consumption.
  • This agreement is a major step on Aludium’s path to accelerate the decarbonization of its industrial activities and to achieve the full integration of renewable, clean and competitive energy supply.

Aludium, a leading manufacturer of aluminum rolled products that operates three plants in Europe, has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Statkraft, Europe’s largest renewable energy producer and a leader in this type of contract. This agreement has also been signed within the framework of the relationship between Statkraft and Fortia Energía, the largest independent supplier in the Iberian electricity market. Valid for 10 years, it will enter into force on July 1, 2024.

Thanks to this strategic alliance, Aludium will ensure that more than one third of its annual electricity consumption comes from renewable energies. Reduce total carbon intensity to less than 4.5 tCO2/t Al, use renewable energy for power supply, create certified low-carbon products, increase aluminum scrap recycling and maintain the highest industry standards in environmental management certifications are some of the company’s sustainability goals set for 2025 to drive the climate transition.

For Aludium, the agreement with Statkraft and Fortia represents a significant step towards accelerating the decarbonization of its industrial activities and promoting renewable and clean electricity within the company. “With the signing of this agreement, we are taking a significant step towards achieving our goal of having electricity consumption based solely on renewable energy. This marks a notable milestone on our roadmap to meet the sustainability targets set for 2025,” said Lionel Chapis, CEO of Aludium. “The company’s climate action is to accelerate, as part of the solution, the move towards a clean energy transition that transforms the planet into a more sustainable, healthy and resilient place for present and future generations,” he concluded.

Simon Kornek, Vice President Origination Southern Europe at Statkraft, remarked that “this agreement is further proof of how Statkraft is a key partner for heavy industry, accompanying it on its path towards decarbonization and enabling it to continue to generate employment and welfare in a sustainable way. A future with zero net emissions will not be possible if industry is not part of it, as Aludium is doing”.

In the words of Juan Temboury, CEO of Fortia Energía, “this agreement aims to reduce emissions and diversify supply sources and are key to reducing the uncertainty faced by generators and consumers in the electricity market. The long-term partnership established with Statkraft since 2018 shows Fortia Energía’s commitment to play a key role in the path towards energy transition and decarbonization of industries.”
