Novelis is working to educate the native South Korean public about the important issue of recycling, especially when it comes to cans. However, environmental systems and collective awareness are not yet sufficient to get an old can recycled into a new aluminum can. This was stated by the head of the Asia-Pacific business of Novelis, which is a global manufacturer of rolled aluminum and recycler.
Novelis Asia president Sachin Satpute said that “the government should be more realistic in setting standards for aluminum can recycling.” In addition, the Ministry of the Environment decided to take important steps towards the shift towards recycling and reuse of materials within the circular economy. The company has been suggesting that aluminum scrap should also be designated as a circular resource rather than a waste material, which is subject to stricter regulations.
In addition, there is a need to obtain resources containing low levels of foreign matter. For this reason, it has been established that these should have no more than 2% contaminants. Therefore, the result is that a simple aluminum can weighing 20 grams cannot contain more than 400 milligrams of contamination in order to be recycled and converted into a circular resource.
For this reason, Novelis advised the ministry that a maximum pollutant emission rate of at least 8.5 percent should be established. This company sought to inform Korean consumers about the importance of properly cleaning their cans after use to improve the never-ending recycling cycle, which would help reduce carbon emissions.
“Used beverage cans can be recycled back into new cans only if they are of good quality, free of various contaminants. Cans that do not make it to the closed-loop recycling process are either recycled or end up in a landfill, losing their economic and environmental value as a circular resource.”said Satpute.
The president of Novelis Asia spoke about his plans, despite the current economic slowdown, to invest more capital in Korea. There is no doubt that these new projects will come with challenges such as inflation and currency uncertainty.
“Novelis is investing more than $50 million to build a new aluminum recycling center in Ulsan,”
said the executive, adding that “the company has invested $40 million to eliminate bottlenecks in its Korean operations to improve productivity, quality and safety.”
According to Satpute, their Yeongju plant has proven to be the region’s leading supplier of high-quality, low-carbon products. The packaging created there incorporates more than 80% recycled material, which means it will help customers develop sustainable options with less pollution to the environment.
