In order to achieve sustainability, ASI declared its firm intention to create the most sustainable packaging on the market. To achieve this, it decided to make agreements with suppliers and require them to deliver ASI-certified aluminum foil along with a commitment to use mostly pre-consumer recycled material. They set this goal to have the best in terms of packaging and to be 100% sure that all their materials are certified according to reliable and valid standards by a specialized agency.

“Our ASI certification matters to us because it is consistent with our strategy and ambition to create the most sustainable packaging solution on the market for food, dairy and non-carbonated soft drinks. Prior to joining ASI, we had established a corporate sustainability strategy that is our roadmap for improvement. The strategy addressed responsible sourcing, production and packaging. A key element of the strategy was to certify our raw materials under schemes that are independently audited with a high level of confidence and broad stakeholder acceptance. We are very proud to have been the first company in the aseptic packaging industry to achieve ASI Chain of Custody (CoC) certification and we were the first company in the world to use the ASI Responsible Aluminum Sourcing On-Product logo on a product. Being able to use the ASI Responsible Aluminum Sourcing On-Product logo on products provides added value to our customers as a point-of-sale reference for consumers who ultimately purchase the packaging and choose a more sustainable product. By communicating about ASI in this way, we continue to enhance ASI’s understanding with consumers and provide a similar level of visibility to ASI as FSC has.” reiterated.

Prior to joining ASI, we had been involved in other processes, such as SMETA, FSC and others, which all had ESG (environmental) aspects. We then decided to take a step forward with ASI to unite the global industry under the certification. Prior to the release of the Chain of Custody Standard in 2017, we were already working with our main foil supplier to train them so that when the standard was released we could implement it quickly. And so it was that from the beginning of 2023 all our supply was certified under ASI.

The company also made changes to its sustainability strategy last year. “This meant adopting four basic principles, Resource Positive, Climate Positive, Food Positive and Forest Positive. These positive elements aim to achieve a net balance between humans and the planet, obtaining what is necessary from it without depleting it and generating alternatives for environmental conservation. In addition, the goal is to reduce the amount of food waste through technological innovations.”they detailed.

SIG added that “our Food+ program in collaboration with an NGO has resulted in a pilot project for the province of Bangladesh. With this we have managed to bring a unique cooking and preservation system that uses boiling technology that does not require refrigeration. This technology was applied in mobile containers placed near agricultural sites for use with surplus crops to make traditional meals without the need for cooling. At the end, all the packaged food is donated to schools to be served as lunch packs making a significant impact on the well-being and nutrition of both faculty and students.

Since last January, SIG has been procuring all the aluminum needed for SIG cartons made from aseptic cartonboard, ensuring that they meet ASI international standards worldwide.
The latest trend in technological progress is the launch of cartons without an outer layer of aluminum. Understanding that materials such as these have a lower carbon footprint, it has been decided to replace them with forestry materials. However, most products still require such a metallic cover, which means that ASI certification is required to make use of aluminum foil here.
