Roberto Alonso, secretary general of Anfaco, was appointed president of Eurothon, the General Assembly of the European Tropical Tuna Interprofessional Committee. Among his main functions, Alonso will be in charge of leading the tuna sector in the face of the challenges arising from the Green Pact, as well as inflation.
Specifically, Eurothon is a European reference organization for the tuna value chain, which unanimously decided to appoint the current secretary general of the National Association of Canned Fish Manufacturers (Anfaco-Cecopesca) as its new president. Alonso, is facing a moment of special relevance, “given the difficulties that fleet and processing industry are going through. We are essential allies, whose relevance needs an active defense from the EU,” he added.
The fishing sector is currently facing unfair competition from third countries to the detriment of EU countries because Brussels does not have a clear roadmap in this area. The objective is none other than to secure the fishing quota and increase the volumes of canned fish produced.
Alonso stressed the idea that “we must focus on our European industry, including the transformation process. This must be a priority for the EU institutions, as it is their overall sphere of influence on fisheries governance, combating illegal fishing or ending forced labor in third countries.”.
Lastly, the regulatory changes resulting from the Green Pact, which is still in process, and which hinge on the concept of sustainability, should be analyzed for a protein with low CO2 emissions, high nutritional quality, and which may be adversely affected by hasty regulatory restrictions that could harm industrial operations or its commercialization in an inflationary economic environment.
