The multinational Novelis announced that its manufacturing facility in Changzhou, China, has received approval from the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) by obtaining Chain of Custody Standard Certification.

The plant achieved ASI Performance Standard Certification in May 2022 and is now fully ASI certified. The ASI Chain of Custody Standard complements the Performance Standard by certifying not only responsible aluminum production, but also its sourcing and processing along the value chain.

James Liu, the head of Novelis China and also Vice President of Automotive in the Asian region noted in this regard, “With the continuous development of lightweighting technology and the ongoing pursuit of sustainable low-carbon development, we see great potential in China to expand the use of lightweight aluminum solutions in the automotive and aerospace industries. Driven by our purpose to shape a sustainable world together, we are committed to working with our partners across the value chain to introduce more cutting-edge technologies and sustainable, low-carbon aluminum solutions in China.”

In addition, Novelis is committed to reducing its contribution to climate change and that of its customers. To this end, a plan has been proposed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 or earlier. This includes a 30% reduction in its carbon footprint by 2026, as well as decreases in waste to landfill, energy intensity and water intensity by the same margin over the same timeframe.

It also has as its main objective to achieve ASI certifications in all its plants worldwide. In addition to the dual certification at its Changzhou plant, Novelis’ Zhenjiang plant is ASI Performance Standard certified and is pursuing chain-of-custody certification. In addition to China, Novelis has achieved ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody certifications at all of its Korean and European manufacturing sites, as well as at its Pindamonhangaba facility and its 14 scrap collection centers in Brazil. In addition, three of the company’s North American plants have performance standards certifications and are pursuing Chain of Custody certification.
