RIO TINTO DONATES $2 MILLION TO FLOOD RECOVERY IN KIMBERLY
Rio Tinto announced the donation of $2 million to the Mayor’s Relief Aid Fund to support Kimberley communities devastated by the catastrophic flooding event generated by former tropical cyclone Ellie. Employee donations to the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund will also be matched dollar for dollar by Rio Tinto.
Rio Tinto Iron Ore CEO Simon Trott said, “With our strong connection to the Kimberley region, we want to help those suffering from the worst flooding in Western Australia’s history. For more than 50 years, our people have been helping to build thriving and resilient communities in Western Australia. Rio Tinto employees will be devastated by the people and communities in the Kimberley region and we will also match their donations.
“We are also working with our community partners and stakeholders in Kimberley to see what additional assistance we can provide to make a positive contribution on the ground,” the head added.
Multinational Rio Tinto has been part of the Kimberley region for more than four decades with the Argyle diamond mine operating from 1983 until 2020 and through the West Kimberley fly-in fly-in (FIFO) program, which has been in operation for more than 15 years.
